Aiming to improve urban mobility, the Municipality of Montevideo turned to a key tool: the origin-destination (OD) matrix. This matrix helps understand how people move through the city, identifying patterns, peak hours, and the most traveled areas.

With technological support and updated methodologies, a more robust version of the OD matrix was developed, integrating data from STM transit cards, GPS devices on public transport units, and urban sensors. This evolution enabled authorities to make more accurate decisions regarding public transport, road infrastructure, and urban space planning.

Result:
A better-connected city with more efficient mobility policies based on real-world data. Montevideo is now a regional benchmark in the use of data for urban design.
