However, its\nDNA was forged much, much earlier, in a setting that may come as a surprise to many\nreaders: the Japanese automotive industry of 1945, devastated in the aftermath of\nWorld War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"311\" height=\"162\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/emq.qck.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen8.jpg?resize=311%2C162&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7088\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen8.jpg?w=311&amp;ssl=1 311w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen8.jpg?resize=300%2C156&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen8.jpg?resize=18%2C9&amp;ssl=1 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine running a factory where:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Basic supplies are a luxury. Every screw counts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The local market is small and ever-changing. Mass production is unfeasible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cost of mistakes is extremely high. A single defect can destroy slim profit\nmargins.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The U.S. introduces statistical quality control (Deming and his PDCA),\nestablishing new standards during the Allied occupation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The only survival strategy is to improve every single day.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"614\" height=\"408\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/emq.qck.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen2-1.jpg?resize=614%2C408&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7089\" style=\"width:387px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen2-1.jpg?w=614&amp;ssl=1 614w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen2-1.jpg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen2-1.jpg?resize=18%2C12&amp;ssl=1 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Toyota, a factory that had been a strategic Allied target for manufacturing war\nmachinery engines, needed to create a production system that was flexible, adaptable,\nlow-cost, yet highly reliable. It was in this context of scarcity, pressure for quality, and\nnew standards that Taiichi Ohno and Eiji Toyoda turned continuous improvement and\nrespect for people into foundational pillars of Toyota\u2019s way of working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"216\" height=\"185\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/emq.qck.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen3.png?resize=216%2C185&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7090\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen3.png?w=216&amp;ssl=1 216w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen3.png?resize=14%2C12&amp;ssl=1 14w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1950, Eiji Toyoda visited Ford\u2019s massive plant in Detroit. He was impressed, but he\nidentified an Achilles\u2019 heel: giant inventories and costly rework. Just days later, in a\nsimple supermarket, he noticed shelves being restocked only when customers\nemptied them. That \u201cpull\u201d logic\u2014demand pulling production\u2014inspired what would\nbecome the Toyota Production System (TPS), the foundation of what we now call\nLean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"392\" height=\"301\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/emq.qck.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen4.png?resize=392%2C301&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7091\" style=\"width:245px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen4.png?w=392&amp;ssl=1 392w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen4.png?resize=300%2C230&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen4.png?resize=16%2C12&amp;ssl=1 16w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By the late 1970s, Toyota\u2019s TPS was producing with such efficiency that it embarrassed\nFord\u2019s mass production model. The West recognizes this success and adopted the\nmethodology under the name Lean Manufacturing, exporting five core principles still\nrecognizable on any modern sprint board:<br><br><strong>Value first:<\/strong> The customer decides what is worth paying for.<br><strong>Respect for the expert: <\/strong>The operator, technician, or developer is the process expert and should play a central role in its optimization and improvement.<br><strong>Continuous improvement:<\/strong> Leaders work side by side with operators to\nobserve, support, and optimize.<br><strong>Systemic thinking:<\/strong> The production process is transversal and operates as a\nflow, not as an isolated unit.<br><strong>Servant leadership:<\/strong> Managers remove obstacles for the team.<br><br>This methodology and its pillars were adopted not only by the automotive industry but\nby all kinds of manufacturing. In 1986, Takeuchi &amp; Nonaka (yes, the same ones who\ndefined the SECI knowledge management model I mentioned in my previous article)\ndescribed the Lean Manufacturing principles in The New New Product Development\nGame, stating: \u201c\u2026a holistic or <strong>rugby<\/strong>\"approach\u2014where the team tries to go the\ndistance as a single unit, passing the ball back and forth\u2014may better meet today\u2019s\ncompetitive demands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"518\" height=\"259\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/emq.qck.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen5.jpg?resize=518%2C259&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7092\" style=\"width:294px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen5.jpg?w=518&amp;ssl=1 518w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen5.jpg?resize=300%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/urudata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Imagen5.jpg?resize=18%2C9&amp;ssl=1 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This metaphor would later be transformed by Jeff Sutherland and Ken Schwaber into <strong>Scrum<\/strong> Scrum (1990\u20131995), the first explicitly Agile framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it wasn&#039;t until 2001 that 17 software professionals signed the <strong>Manifiesto \u00c1gil <\/strong>Manifesto, formally and officially adopting \u201cLean philosophy\u201d into IT as a standard\nframework.
